RANKIN.
John Rankin Waddell, working name Rankin, born 1966, is an English portrait and fashion photographer.
Rankin's "destroy" project was a concept which involved teaming up with a children's music charity; Youth Music! Due to the charities 10th birthday, Rankin asked 70 musicians and visual artists to "destroy" their own portraits taken by the iconic photographer. This would eventually lead to an iconic, original piece of work produced by the artist themselves. The the chosen musicians for the project had also inspired Rankin's son Lyle and his love of music.
Rankin's work has been created with the collaboration with music/visual artists. The outcome begins with the photographing the artists portrait! This is natural to Rankin as portrait photography is something which he specialists in. After the portraits have been taken, it becomes the artists turn to start "manipulating them".

ALANIS MORISSETTE.
“Alanis had seen some photos of mine from a series called ‘Highly Flammable’, where the models were burning in the frame, and that's why she commissioned me. It seems apt that she chose to burn this image”

ALEX JAMES.
“This photo is from a cover of Dazed & Confused… I gave Alex the stripped back version of the final shot for this project. Just as I chose to layer those images to give my interpretation of the band at the time, Alex has chosen to add lavender and thyme to his image, creating a more personal and amusing layer”

ALEX ZANE.
"I went to medical school, and dissection and the anatomy of the human body fascinated me. I thought that taking the skin off the face to reveal the mass of intertwined organs, tendons and bone would be interesting as a contrast to the monochrome of the photo. I think we spend so much time colouring, styling and grooming the surface of our faces to give us our individual identities, but a centimetre deep we all look pretty much the same. Mainly, though, I just wanted to see what I’d look like as a zombie"

ANDRE 3000.
“This image was part of a press shoot for Outkast. Andre created a few versions of this image... This is my favourite, and I think it is really beautiful. My photograph of him is so calm and introspective, and he has chosen to put all his energy and passion in to the picture by combining fire and dance”

EXAMPLE.
" One thing that always delights and confuses me is the marketing department. I actually heard the words, ‘You look okay for London fans, but not for kids in Preston and Wigan.’ Hair, facial hair, clothes, trainers, weight, the way artists talk are all scrutinised. Now I can destroy these notions.”
